The Questions I Ask That Often Tell Me More Than Your Symptoms

The answer often tells me more than a list of symptoms ever could.

Imagine you walk into a doctor’s office because you have been exhausted for months. You start explaining what’s going on and before you even finish, you are told that it’s probably “just stress”…”just hormones”…or simply blamed on part of getting older.

You leave not feeling heard at all and just more frustrated.

What if hearing your story was actually the key to understanding how and why your symptoms developed in the first place?

I’ve found that one of the most important parts of supporting someone’s health is simply making the time to hear their story.

Symptoms are important for sure, but they only tell us what is happening right now.

To understand why they might be happening, we often need to back up…sometimes all the way to how you were born (vaginally or by C-section).

When we understand what life transition may have been the start of your symptoms, we can truly start to piece together the key triggering events that lead to your current symptoms.

When did you last feel like yourself?

We need to understand if there was a sudden change or if this was something that developed gradually over time.

For example, was there…

  • A pregnancy
  • A round of antibiotics
  • A surgery
  • A major life stress
  • An illness
  • A trip abroad
  • A hormone transition (perimenopause or puberty)

…where you noticed things start to shift.

These answers often provide some of the biggest clues.

An illness or surgery can place significant stress on the body. Pair that with medications that may deplete important nutrients, and over time it can contribute to digestive issues and other symptoms.

Tell me about your digestion

I don’t just want a generic good/bad.

I want to know…

  • Specifics about your bowel movements
  • How long you feel full after meals
  • Do you struggle with any reflux or heartburn
  • Do you feel reactive to any foods

If you aren’t properly digesting and absorbing your food, it’s much harder to get the vitamins and minerals your body needs. Those nutrients help support everything from making stomach acid and digestive enzymes to producing energy. Over time, poor digestion can become a cycle that keeps feeding itself unless we address the underlying issue.

What have you really tried?

I want to know what’s helped, what hasn’t and if you have become overwhelmed with what to try next.

Some clients tell me they “felt great on Whole 30” but they can’t sustain it and they aren’t sure what to do next. This tells me a lot. We can talk through a proper food reintroduction where I can help them determine if its just 1 food that’s triggering the symptoms for them.

Or maybe someone notices they always feel worse after drinking alcohol. That tells me there’s another clue worth exploring rather than simply telling them to avoid alcohol forever.

I could have two women of similar age come to me complaining of fatigue.

Mary’s fatigue started about 6 months after having a bad case of COVID.

Laura’s fatigue gradually worsened over 5 years alongside digestive symptoms and increasing food sensitivities.

Same symptom – 2 very different stories.

That’s why context matters.

This Is Why I Don’t Start Everyone the Same Way

Taking time to have these conversations with clients in our 90-minute Intro Session is what makes my work so powerful.

This conversation helps me determine if you might benefit most from:

  • Nutrition/dietary changes
  • Stress support
  • Improving digestive supports
  • Functional testing
  • or simply strengthening the foundations first

If you have been told that everything looks “normal” but you still don’t feel like yourself – you deserve better.

If you’ve tried changing your diet, adding supplements, or searching for answers online but you have yet to find the “magic bullet”, its probably time for an outside perspective.

It’s typically not one missing magic solution, it is usually a number of things adding up over time. Without backing up and looking at your whole story, it’s nearly impossible to figure out the best way to support YOU.

Sometimes the missing piece isn’t another supplement or another restrictive diet. It’s having someone take the time to truly understand your story before deciding what comes next.

I believe that your symptoms deserve to be taken seriously.

And, I also believe they deserve context.

When we understand how your health story unfolded, we can make informed decisions about what to do next.

This is also one of the reasons I don’t jump straight to functional lab testing for every client. Sometimes the answers become much clearer after simply listening and asking the right questions.
