Why Your Energy Crashes (Even When You’re Eating ‘Healthy’)

read

Balanced plate showing protein (chicken), fiber-rich greens with healthy fats, and starchy carbohydrates (potatoes).

Does this feel familiar?

You wake up feeling fine.
You try to eat a healthy breakfast and pack something good for lunch…

But by mid-afternoon, you’re:

  • Hitting a wall
  • Reaching for caffeine or something sweet
  • Feeling foggy
  • Snapping at your coworkers or kids

This isn’t your imagination.

You’ve likely just hit the bottom of the blood sugar rollercoaster.

The good news?

You don’t have to stay on that ride – and getting off is often simpler than you think.

When you eat carbohydrates, our blood sugar naturally rises.

But when meals are heavier in carbs and lacking balance, that rise happens quickly…and then drops just as fast.

This is what I mean by the blood sugar rollercoaster.

That drop = the crash you’re feeling.

It can feel like:

  • Headaches
  • Energy dips
  • Cravings (usually for sugar or caffeine)
  • Brain fog
  • Mood swings
  • Feeling shaky or jittery

This pattern is extremely common and its usually tied to how meals are built.

You might be:

  • Eating meals that are mostly carbs (even the “healthy” ones)
  • Skipping meals and generally not eating enough
  • Missing enough protein or fat (especially at breakfast and lunch)
  • Grabbing quick options like bars, instant oatmeal, or bagels

It’s not that these foods are “bad”.

It’s what you pair with them (or don’t) that drives your body’s response.

This is where things can shift very quickly.

Aim to build meals with:

  • Protein
  • Carbohydrates
  • Healthy Fats
  • Fiber

This balance will slow your digestion (in a good way) and help keep your energy steady all day.

Here’s why each matter:

  • Protein → supports fullness and helps stabilize blood sugar
  • Fiber (from carbs + veggies) → supports digestion and steady energy
  • Healthy fats → support hormones and help slow the release of glucose into the bloodstream

And if you’re not sure where to start…

Breakfast is the most powerful places to start!

It truly sets you up for success the rest of the day!

You can build your favorite healthy meals into stable blood sugar powerhouses with some simple adds.

Oatmeal:
Instead of oats alone ->
Add protein powder  + healthy fats and fiber (top with ground flax seed, nuts, seeds, nut butters, berries)

Smoothies:
Not just fruit! ->
Add greens + nut butter + 30 grams of protein powder to keep you full and energized

Salad
Make it more than a bowl of veggies ->
Add 25-35 grams of protein + healthy oils like olive oil
(most store-bought dressings use lower-quality oils, so this can make a big difference)

This goes deeper than just wanting more energy in the afternoon.

Over time, these swings in blood sugar will start to drive other imbalances as well.

Things like:

  • Hormone Imbalances
  • Insulin Resistance
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Increased Inflammation

Stable blood sugar keeps your body feel safe and supported which impacts nearly every system.

No, you don’t need perfection here.

Start small:

  • Focus on one meal per day
  • Get consistent with that one meal before changing more

My advice – start with breakfast.

That might look like:

  • Prepping something the night before
  • Or giving yourself an extra 10-15 minutes in the morning

It doesn’t have to be complicated to make a difference.

Where is the first place you want to start this week?
